Pastel portrait

After not using pastels for a very long time, I decided to go back to them last night to do a portrait. I stopped using them because I didn't like the dust, they're a pain to frame, and they're fragile. But I've missed drawing, and the softness and ease of layering colors over one another to build up the image. My surface was a gray Canson paper. I'll probably be doing more of these in the future.

Brewster General Store- sold

I painted on Cape Cod the other day with two good friends. The General Store in Brewster was a fun subject and we had a great spot in the shade across the street. If I painted this realistically, the bottom would have been all cars and trucks. Traffic on the Cape in the summer!

Painting at Coggeshall Farm

We had a good time painting at historic Coggeshall Farm in Bristol RI on Wednesday afternoon. It was hot, but we were in the shade and had a nice breeze. One of the costumed interpreters modeled for us. 

I'm cheating here, I didn't like the paintings that I did of our models so I'm posting a little painting I did from photos later of two of the farm people taking a lunch break, with the resident cat.

I thought everyone else did a great job on their paintings and drawings of the model. Thanks to Jill, Janice and Suzanne for giving me photos of their work.

 There was a roaming flock of chickens and turkeys who were very curious and poked around in our painting gear to see if there was anything they could eat. Turns out chickens are a lot more vocal than I realized.

 Feeding time came after we were all done. I got a lot of great photos that may eventually get turned into paintings. Check out the Arts on the Farm page for upcoming events.

Colors of the Azores

I recently got back from a trip to the Azores. Didn't do much drawing or painting while I was there, unfortunately- too busy sightseeing. I did this from a photo when I got back. It's a colorful place- you wouldn't see bright orange houses or white houses with lime green trim in New England, but there it just looks right.
