Cleaning up again-sold

I did a small version of this a while back, wanted to try something a little larger.

If you're in the Providence area, just a reminder-  Save the Bay's 5th annual "Artists for Save the Bay" opens next week. Tickets for the opening are $25.00, well worth it and for a very good cause, so get your ticket and come see paintings by some of Little Rhody's finest artists.

Windy day at Rock Harbor

The weather was good during our stay at the cape, but we did get some very windy days, partly the remnants of a hurricane. Most of the time I was working on this painting, I was holding onto it with one hand and painting with the other.  I walked away from it for a minute to get my camera and the wind blew the easel over. That's when I called it quits for that day. Two days later I went back to try to finish it but it was still really windy. I struggled for a while, then packed it up and finished it at home.

The Egret- sold

We went painting in East Greenwich, RI last week where I started this painting. I took photos but really wanted to finish it from life, so we went back yesterday, but the tide was out and I found myself looking at a mudflat. So, I worked on the trees and grass but finished the water from a photo when I got home. Can you see the egret?

This is an interesting spot. It's a new park that used to be a landfill, and now has grass, picnic tables and a walking trail. Because you're on top of a plateau, you have an overview of the marsh and cove, which is a little unusual. It wasn't until I got home that I started to wonder, why would they ever put a landfill on the waterfront? The things we do...

...when I get a big bouquet of flowers for Valentine's Day, I'm compelled to paint them. It seems like such a waste not to. (I am a very frugal person...) This one has taken most of my painting energy for the last week.
 My thanks to Joshua Kadtke and Linda Popple, who have both given me the Sunshine Award, which means I'm supposed to list and link to a dozen other bloggers whose work I like. It may take a while for me to get to that, but in the meantime, take a look at their work!

More coffee 2- sold

I did a little painting of this waitress several months ago, and really wanted to do a large painting of the whole counter at this diner. I did quite a bit of work on it, then set it aside for a week or two. After that I could more easily see what needed to be done to finish it. I got rid of a figure behind the counter on the right, scraped off and simplified the ceiling at the end on the left, and generally tried to lighten, brighten, and bring to a degree of finish, without slavishly following the reference. That's always the question- how much do you spell out, how much do you leave to the imagination?

Well, the holidays are over. We had a great time seeing friends and family but I've missed painting and it's good getting back to the routine. This painting is one I actually finished just before Christmas.

Girls in the sand- part 2

I actually finished this painting a couple of months ago, but wasn't that happy with it- the bottom part of it seemed dead to me. Then I was looking at it yesterday and thought maybe if I cropped a couple of inches off the bottom it might be improved.
Not a big difference, I know, but if you have an opinion about which looks better, let me know.

Cumberland mill

The Blackstone River valley in Rhode Island and Massachusetts is the birthplace of the industrial age in America. This mill is a remnant of that birth.

On another note, the Foundry show opens in just a couple of weeks! I can't believe it's almost here. I've been busily framing lots of little pictures to sell, along with my floral notecards and my book. Put it on your calendar if you're in the area. It's open the first two weekends in December. Opening night is Thursday, Dec. 3.
