Portrait Class

I've been enjoying teaching my Limited Color Portrait class this summer at the South County Art Association. I start each class with a short demo, about 20 minutes. Since most of the students have very limited portrait experience, they find this really helpful.

My goal is to show, fairly quickly, how to get started. I want them to see the big light and dark shapes, and to understand the structure, while still leaving most of the class time to do their own painting. I'm finding that painting demos is an art in itself.

I'll be teaching this again in the fall at the Portsmouth Art Guild (once a week for 5 weeks), and have tentatively scheduled a one day workshop at Jerry's ASW in Providence in October. Stay tuned for the date if you're interested.

We went back to the Audubon Reserve in Westport to paint the other morning. Lots of chicory and Queen Anne's lace. Love that blue!

A very quick study, half hour at the most, of the last light on this group of trees.

View from bike path

Oil on panel, approx. 7.5"x8"
Lately I've really been enjoying going out painting in the evening. There's something about having to paint really fast to catch the light that I just love.

Bikepath in Barrington

Oil on panel, 8" x 8"

My new favorite painting place is the Barrington River. This bridge is part of a bikepath that's about 20 miles long and is really pretty.

There's still room in my classes- both start next week.

Summer classes:
Portraits in limited color, Tuesday nights, July 10, 17, 24, 31, at the South County Art Association.

Plein air in Warren and Bristol, Wednesday mornings, July 11, 18, 25, August 1, through the Portsmouth Arts Guild.

Daylilies by the bay- sold

Hydrangea time-sold

Oil on panel, 6" x 6"
It's that time of year, that beautiful blue of hydrangeas everywhere. Lucky for me, I have a neighbor with a whole row of them who doesn't mind if I clip a few for my painting.

On another note, Paul just wrote a blog post about our recent trip to Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (yes, I said Pennsylvania). Check it out- it's his first time blogging (but not the last, I think).
