This is the demo I did for my plein air class on Saturday- I did a little more work on it at home afterwards.

Painting Plein Air

My plein air class got off to a great start at India Point Park in Providence yesterday. I have a wonderful group and we had an absolutely perfect fall day- sunny but not hot, a little breeze... If the next few Saturdays are even half as nice, we'll be doing well.

Mister G

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20"
Ann and I saw these fishing boats at Point Judith the last time we were there and just HAD to paint them (how can you ignore that turquoise, blue and red together?). We got back there this morning. It was so windy, we had to hang on to our paintings with one hand while we painted with the other. Not the best of circumstances, but you do what you can...
The turquoise boat is Mister G; I'll letter that in when the paint's a bit dryer.

The orange door

Oil on canvas, 11" x 14"
Ann and I found a great spot to paint near Point Judith. This is the first painting I did there Monday morning. When I see a complementary color scheme like this- a little orange, a lot of blue- I just feel compelled to paint it.

Point Judiith

Oil on panel, 8" x 8"
A very quick little painting that I did at Point Judith yesterday morning.

In the sand- sold

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
I bring my little Open Box M Painting box and some photos with me when I'm teaching my class at the Handicraft Club and do a little bit of painting in the course of the day, while my students are working on their own things. This painting is something a little different for me, just building up the surface more slowly than I normally would. I really liked the result.

On another note, I'm offering a Plein Air Workshop in the greater Providence area for anyone who's interested. Three Saturday mornings, 9 AM- noon, Sept. 26, Oct. 3 and 17, with Oct. 24 as a raindate. If it rains more than once, I'll refund money. I'll be giving short demos, but there'll be plenty of time to work on your own paintings. Price: $60.00 for the three sessions. Email me if you're interested.

Sachuest, late afternoon

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
I met some friends recently at Sachuest National Wildlife Refuge in Newport RI for some late afternoon/ early evening painting. This is actually the view from the parking lot. Nice when you don't have to carry your gear very far from your car!

A Jazzy evening

I did these portraits of Tish Adams, a well known jazz singer in Providence, quite a while back. She's turning 50, and is doing a 50th birthday gig at the Hotel Providence this Friday night. These portraits and others will be on display. Starts at 6PM, no cover! I'll be there for at least a little while. Come on by if you're in the area.

Warren Ave. end

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
I had been wanting to paint this blue building for a long time, and when Mike Rooney was here last week, we did it. We were able to stand in the shade in a grassy lot across the street. I'll admit, I'm chicken about painting outside in the city, so it was really nice to have the company.

Road through the marsh

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
Ann and I went painting the other day. We were talking so much we missed the exit we meant to take, so we decided to paint at this marsh in Matunuck, a beautiful spot that I hadn't been to in a couple of years.

The red house

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
This red house is right next to the Point Judith lighthouse in Rhode Island. The great view must make up for having to listen to the foghorn for hours on end when the weather isn't so good. While I was painting, a woman came out and hung some wash on the line- perfect!

View from India Point-sold

Oil on panel, 8" x 10"
I had a great day painting with Mike Rooney last Friday, when he decided to spend a day painting in Providence on his way back to N. Carolina from Cape Cod. Our first stop was at India Point Park in Providence, where this little blue boat with the orange top caught my eye.

Geraniums and marigolds

Oil on canvas, 12" x 12"
I started this last week and was pretty happy with it, but it wasn't finished, and I needed one more session with it. I didn't want to work from a photo, although I took a couple; in bright sunlight like this photos are always pretty washed out looking. So I had to wait for days to get a second crack at this, a day when I was home at the right time (1-2PM), and when there was bright sun. Fortunately the weather this week has been exceptional, so I was able to pull it together.

Sunflowers

Oil on canvas panel, 6" x 8"
Flowers courtesy of my friend Denise, who told me in no uncertain terms that they needed to be painted! Thanks, Denise.
