Latham Park, West Barrington- sold

Oil painting, 8" x 10"

It always amazes me how windy it can be right beside the water, when half a mile inland there's barely a breeze. I had to hold on to my pochade box, and gusts of wind would blow my hand off course when trying to paint some details.

I find clouds difficult to paint-  they continually change shape and color. Shortly before sunset the ones over land picked up a really warm yellowy-brown shadow while over water the shadow was more bluish. Maybe I'll get it the next time...

Sunset in East Providence- sold

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10"
Anytime I see a sky full of dramatic clouds I feel the urge to paint it. The bonus here was the sun showing up at the end, peeking through the tree- I didn't know that was going to happen.

Colt State Park Sketches

I spent a couple of hours at Colt State Park in Bristol, RI this morning, just enjoying drawing. I used gouache for this but thinned it down mostly to watercolor consistency. This building is the park office.

This is a lovely park to have a picnic, lots of trees and tables by the water. (I didn't draw the tables.)

A bridge over an inlet to a marsh, at the entrance to the park.

Email me for prices.

Art trip to North Haven Island

SOLD
I had the good fortune to be invited to stay in an old farmhouse that's being renovated on North Haven Island in Maine for part of this past week. I ended up doing a fair amount of drawing, these sketches are done on Strathmore Toned Gray sketchbook, 5.5" x 8.5". I used pencil and white gouache on some of them, then decided to try just using ink. (I think I like the pencil/gouache better.)

My artist friends and I agreed that the place had a kind of Wyeth vibe to it, particularly with the views of the fields and barns out the windows.

SOLD
Reading by the window.

Still lives by the window were appealing. (We were never without a few bottles of wine.)

An old barn next to the house.

I tried doing a painting of this. I might post it soon, after a few more dabs.

Wicker with a view.

Garden by the garage

Oil, 12" x 9"
Nice when you look in the backyard and realize there's a painting there waiting to be done. This was my second try, getting the values of the greens and lavenders took some practice.

I did this little sketch with gouache to try to get a better feel for the blossoms. (It's about 3" square.) All those greens!
