Red roses on pink

Oil on canvas, 6" x 6"
Just got back from a little vacation in the lovely state of Vermont. Of all the New England states, it's the one we're the least familiar with, so we decided to try to correct that. We camped, biked, swam, and also spent a couple of nights in the city of Burlington. It's really a great little college town, fabulous views of Lake Champlain, lots of restaurants, very bike friendly. I just started a blog, RideWalkHikeBike, if you want to read about it.
I'm also the featured artist today on the Facebook page of Zatista.com. Zatista is a website devoted to connecting buyers and sellers of contemporary original art.

The Fire Boat

Oil on canvas, 9" x 12"
This is the marina beside the old railroad bridge in East Providence. I believe the boat with the red and yellow stripes is the fire department's. It actually pulled away from the dock while I was painting, but then came back about half an hour later.
Email me for the price.

The Quahogger-sold

Oil on panel, 8" x 8"
That's ko-hogger. I've had a plein air group meeting once a week during the summer- amazingly, we haven't been rained out once. I don't always paint while I'm teaching, but this week I arrived at the location early- the ferry dock in Bristol, RI- and got a jump on painting before anyone arrived. The owner of the boat came by and told me I was doing a good job. I was afraid he was planning to take it (the boat) and leave- that's happened to me a number of times- but he didn't.

The Rooftop Bar

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10"
I was at Waterplace Park in Providence recently, one evening when a concert was scheduled to start soon. I was wandering around, taking pictures, and found this vantage point from the the bar on the roof of the restaurant there. The light hitting the city skyline was breathtaking. I did this sketch, along with a couple of others, in preparation for painting a larger version. The challenge is to figure out what colors and values to use in the area in shadow.

Oil on stretched canvas, 6" x 6"
The stripes on the dress of this woman waiting for a bus at the terminal in downtown Providence really caught my eye.

The flowerbox

Oil on canvas panel, 6" x 8"
I painted on Saturday afternoon in Newport with fellow artists from Harbor Fine Art, Betty Ann Morris, Mark Fernandes and Jon McPhillips. While I didn't get anything done that afternoon that I'd want to show here, I did walk around for a little while and got some interesting photos. Newport was packed, it was a beautiful sunny day, and everyone was people-watching.

4 Town Farm

Gouache on watercolor paper, approx. 6" x 8"
Good things about gouache- it dries fast, and can be used either transparent or opaque. Bad thing about gouache- it dries lighter than it looks when wet. (Gouache is an opaque watercolor.) I wanted to see if it would be preferable to oil for doing outdoor studies, so I drove over to this farm not far from where I live. I like it but- now I want to go back and do an oil painting of the same scene.
