A few more sketches from Vieques

I really don't want to let go of the time spent there! The weather was so great, and I had a sketching partner, Ed Huff- you can see his work here- we spent some lovely mornings in Isabel Segunda with our sketchbooks and watercolors.

One of the potted plants on the deck...
Cantina La Reina, downtown Isabel Segunda.
There was a little park in the center of town where we could find shade and sketch the surroundings, like this church tower.
This was a coffee and breakfast kiosk in the park. The smells of the cooking were wonderful.
Playa Grande was a beach like no other I've ever been on- miles of sandy beach that we had all to ourselves.

Ah, more treats to gaze upon as I sip from my morning mug of tea and look out on a beautiful frosty garden in London. These are just exquisite, Kathy, so light and breezy but not at all wishy washy. I like the terracotta coloured wall. If you do sketch in pen or pencil before or after painting, what kind of thing do you use, I'm curious? It's unobtrusive and I like that.

Thanks, Caroline! I just use a regular no. 2 pencil. Usually I do the sketch lightly, go in with the watercolors, then go back with pencil for emphasis. I was wishing that I had pen and ink when I was there, but I forgot to pack it. Probably just as well.

Funny how often these things work out for the best isn't it. I also really like the way you've indicated the rocks' craggy angles with light and shade. I'm impressed you could think so clearly, as you need to do with watercolour, sitting in the sun and with a cheeky cocktail to cool you down no doubt.

I tried to sit in the shade as much as possible, the sun's quite hot. And I may have had a glass of wine, although about half of these were done in the morning, so coffee was the preferred beverage.
