Hemingway's Cats

In Key West you can take a tour of Ernest Hemingway's home. One of the major talking points of the tour (after his wives) is the cats. There are at least 40 of them, all supposed to be descendants of one of Hemingway's. His cat had double paws, aka 6 toes, and nearly half of the cats at the house have the same paws. During the day they have run of the house, although at night they're shooed outside because they would set off the motion detector. This one was sitting on the fountain on the front walk.

Key West chickens- sold

We were in Key West for a few days of our trip to Florida. If you've ever been there, you've seen the chickens and roosters everywhere. The story we were told is that cock fighting used to be legal, but when it was banned the birds were let go to roam the streets at will. We were there less than 20 minutes when we saw a chicken crossing the street almost get run over by a tourist on a bicycle. We met someone who complained about hearing roosters crowing in the wee hours, but fortunately we never had to put up with that.

I haven't posted for a while because I've been in Florida for the last 10 days. Really nice- in the 80's and sunny every day. Back in Rhode Island now, everything is gray and brown and chilly, if not cold.
This is a painting I did not long before I left, sitting in my car. This bridge connects East Providence, where I live, with Providence. I've painted it a number of times because I love the way the sun hits it both morning and afternoon.

I've been taking photos of skiffs over the last few years and the idea of doing a series of paintings of them has lodged in my head. I'm thinking of doing them large- sofa size, as the ads say. Why skiffs? They're humble, unassuming, essential, but used mostly as transport from the beach or dock to the REAL boat. Painted large, you could almost imagine yourself jumping in and gliding away.

A Bit of Whimsy

I was doing some much needed cleaning in my studio yesterday when I came across this remnant from my previous life as a greeting card illustrator. These are watercolor illustrations of a card collection called "Kitty Cove", where we visit a charming little seaside town populated by cute kitties ( :

They're all a little under 8" x 6", painted on Arches watercolor paper, and were designed to be diecut along the top (except for the horizontal one). Most of them also have a kind of blank area where the title would be dropped in (like, Happy Birthday!). I know there were originally 20 designs; I don't know what happened to the other two. If I were to do them again I'd try to paint them a little more loosely, but overall, I'm actually still kind of happy with them.
