Watercolor sketches of ceramics

The Handicraft Club in Providence has a wonderful collection of ceramics in their dining room and I have wanted to do some paintings of them for a long time. I finally got some done this fall, getting there an hour before my class started. These are all watercolor, pen and pencil with some white gouache on Arches paper, 1"-3" high.

Portraits

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to have my portrait done a few times, and I thought I'd share them. This was done by Kate Huntington, an extremely talented and devoted artist here in Providence RI. She made me look better than I actually do.
This was done by my high school art teacher, Mr. Chen, as a demonstration for the class.

And this was done by my friend April, the humor illustrator, when we worked for the card company and I had been asked to do "some quick watercolor illustrations"- 20 of them- in a week or so. I guess I seemed kind of stressed.

Waves and rocks- sold

Gouache on watercolor paper, approx. 7" x 9"
From my archives (meaning, I did this a couple of years ago and forgot I had it). I was at the Sachuest Wildlife Preserve, near Newport RI.

I really like gouache because it dries fast and can be worked over
immediately, or re-wet and wiped off. When I was an illustrator
I did a number of still life paintings at home to improve my skills
with the medium and with painting things like flowers.
I sent them to American Artist magazine and got my first (and only)
cover of a national magazine...
