A quick breakfast sketch...

...this morning, watercolor and pencil on paper. The one bad thing about daylight savings is suddenly it's dark again in the morning when we meet at 6AM.

I can't seem to get enough of these umbrellas. The orange and blue make such a great complementary color scheme.
I will be teaching a workshop on "Color mixing for painters" at the South County Art Association in Kingston, RI, next week, March 19 and 20, in the evening. It's appropriate for beginners and intermediate painters who want a better foundation of knowledge about color. There's still room in the class if you're interested.

Breakfast at Louis'

I knew all those scraps of nice watercolor paper that I saved would eventually get used- I cut them up into smaller rectangles, got out some watercolors I haven't used in ages and put some color in my sketch this morning at Louis', a great little restaurant that opens at 5AM on the east side of Providence.

A waterbrush is a great tool in this situation- it holds water that you can squeeze out throughout the felt tip.

I've been fooling around with some flower paintings for a class I might be teaching and feel like I've found the cure for the winter blahs. Paint flowers! Fun, colorful, exuberant. I can (almost) guarantee you'll feel better.

And speaking of portraits, if you like John Singer Sargent, you might enjoy"Strapless" by Deborah Davis. It's about his painting of the famous Madame X. An easy and interesting read. As a society woman, she couldn't let just anyone paint her portrait. He had to convince her he was the right person for the job, and the result was extremely controversial.

Traveling, sketching

We just got back from a trip to Las Vegas and Death Valley National Park. We stayed in a little town called Beatty, NV, to go to the park, where I did some sketching. I also did my best to make use of time sitting in the airport, sketching the other captives. (If I never see the Las Vegas airport again, that will be too soon.)
